Art Porn: The laser-etched human constellations of Jason Thielke

Jason Thielkeʼs figurative drawings explore the constellation of human experience. Using graphite wood and fucking lasers and shit, he highlights the interconnectivity of human features. He's even got some mural real estate in Boulder, see if you can spot it.

Nickname: Jay Jay.

Birthplace: Phoenix, AZ.

Guilty pleasure: Starbucks Frappuccino.

Favorite color: Black.

Artistic tool of choice: I enjoy drawing the most so I’ll go with graphite.

How did you get into art? I was good at drawing from an early age. My grandmother was crafty and loved American Indian and Southwestern art. My mother is a quilter. She enrolled me in summer art classes at Arizona State University.

What is it about art that you love?  I love the process and evolution within an artist’s body of work. I admire it in other artists and enjoy where I’ve been and am going with my work. It excites me and is rewarding.

Is there a message behind your artwork? Maybe it’s about the frailty of youth and beauty?

What should people know when viewing your work? Nothing. People enjoy my art for many different reasons and on levels that are surprising to me sometimes.

Do you have any influences for your art? Yes, Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Alphonse Mucha, J. C. Leyendecker and Frank Lloyd Wright amongst other classics. I also love Bruno Walpoth’s wood sculptures. Plus my friend and ex-studiomate Lui Ferreyra and I both have similar stylistic tastes.

Best advice you’ve received? To quit my day job and pursue art full-time.
